Christmas 2008

 Christmas Morning at the Austins...

...Alivia woke up at 6:30 and I sent her back to bed. We all got up with Asher about 7:15. The girls were beyond excited. We opened the stockings and Alivia was shocked to see that Santa left a piece of cookie, but drank all the milk. Then, it was donut time...yummy Christmas decorated donuts and cocoa. The kids ate quickly before Grandma Bet and Grandpa Bill arrived for the gifts. Aunt Nikki came shortly thereafter. Alivia would open a present, not even look at it, and say, "are there any more for me to open up?" She did not even care what was inside. I guess we should have just wrapped boxes. Addison opened a few gifts, falling in love with her new jewelry box from Grandma and Grandpa, Madeline Book, and Grandpa's lap. She was not overly interested in anything. Asher liked the toys, sitting on his gifts and climbing on the gift boxes. Chris and I quickly opened out gifts hardly looking at them before a child would climb on laps. But, it was so much fun!

Favorite gift breakdown
Alivia and Addison shared: Disney dress up box, American girl dolls (Addi really likes hers).

BIG GIFT FOR ALL: Train table, many Thomas wooden trains

Alivia: Clothes, pink computer, walkie talkies (that she shares with Addison), jewelry box with jewelry.

Addison: Light bright, finger paints, Madeline book, and jewelry box.

Asher (who cared less about anything but where Mommy was): little noisy boy toys, little motorcycle.

Chris: IPOD Touch and itunes.

Krista: Socks, Garman pedometer, running pants (I think Topher thinks I am out of shape or something) and a lot of clothes (some still wrapped in the box).

After our dinner, Chris and Alivia left me to host my family and put the babies to bed while he went to his parents for a bit. It was a quiet afternoon without Alivia at home to show Grandma Marci all of her toys.

When they got home, we enjoyed our traditional, Angel Cake, sang Happy Birthday to Jesus and Alivia blew out the candle. Mmm, Aunt Nikki makes a mean Angel Cake!

By the time it was bedtime, the kiddos were more than tired. Alivia and Addison are now asleep with their new toys, in bed with them.

All the thought, planning, shopping, wrapping, and it is all over in a flash. Sure reminds me a lot of our wedding day! :) Enjoy every moment, every year, in slow motion, because Christmas goes by too fast!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve with the Bigas

We celebrated Christmas Eve at the Biga's this year. We arrived just before 4, and the fun began soon after. There are many cousins to play with, as well as toys, so the kids have a blast! We went to the 8pm Mass like we did last year. But, this year, we decided we will never, and I mean never, do that again. (We found out that there is a negative to having kiddos on a strict nighttime schedule. 8PM is bedtime - any day of the year.) Alivia, Addison and Asher were ready for bed, making Mass less than enjoyable. Next year, we will have to miss family time to go to Mass. We came home, got the cookies and milk ready for Santa, read our traditional Christmas stories, and go the kids to bed about 10! Yikes! We still had to get the presents ready and the house picked up for family the next day. Needless to say, I can not remember walking to bed (I think I was asleep before I walked upstairs).

Now, onto having a Merry Chrismtas to ALL!!

Being Free

Being Free sounds good doesn't it. This time I not ready to be all excited about it. Asher is officially weaned. I weaned him from his morning feeding on Sunday when he slept in (until 7) and just fed him breakfast. He has been fussy in the mornings, I think because of being weaned and because he was going back to bed after nursing. We may have to reintroduce a morning nap. He gives me these puppy dog eyes like he is wondering why I am doing this to him? It is so sad. It makes me sad that for me, this officially ends BABY Asher and moves him up to a big boy. I miss the time we had in the mornings, too.

This is the first time in over 3 years that I have not been physically attached to one of our kids (actually almost 5 if you consider I only had a few months off between nursing Alivia and becoming pregnant with Addison). You think I would be liberated or something. Instead, I am sad. The kids are growing up so fast...too fast. Makes me stop and appreciate the moments more, give more kisses, and give longer hugs.

So, here's to being Free, whether I am ready or not!

It's in the bag?

Every night is much like the last. We eat dinner, I clean up. While I clean up, the girls go into their rooms and play while Asher plays cars or something with Daddy in the family room. Keep in mind, we have a 2 story house (3 levels including the basement), so we can only hear the girls upstairs - not see them. My clean up takes 10 to 15 minutes depending upon how messy dinner was.
Anyway, 2 nights ago started off the same. We ate dinner, I started the clean up while the girls raced to play in their rooms until bath time. However, this night was different. Alivia yelled downstairs to me, "Mommy, Addison's making a mess." Oh, great! I have not even got this mess cleaned up. So, I raced upstairs to see what she was up to. Well, Alivia had opened the soap for her and she was rubbing soap all over their bathroom that I had just cleaned that morning. Alivia had also gotten the Pledge bottle down and they had sprayed that all over the floor making it extremely slippery. I sent Alivia and Addison to their rooms while I tried to start cleaning it up.
"But wait..." Alivia said.
But wait what? I asked.
"Piper...she is in the hamper." Okay, I have seen this before. Alviia takes out the clothes and puts Piper, our cat, in there (now can you see why I thought Piper would be better off in a better home?). I told Alivia to repeat that to Daddy as he got upstairs to see what was going on.
"Piper is in the pink bag in the hamper."
Pink bag? What pink bag. My mind raced as I quickly opened the hamper to find Piper shoved into an extremely small zip up dolly bag, her eyes bugging out of her tiny head in fear! UGH! I quickly opened the bag to save our cat from an early entry to the other world for pets. I have never seen that cat run away so fast!
Needless to say, we have a couple new rules now.
1. Alivia and Addison (and Asher too but that is obvious) can now only play right in front of us! They can not go to their rooms or to another level in our home without Mommy or Daddy with them.
2. LEAVE PIPER ALONE! We are allowing them to pet the cat when she is on our laps. Other than that, Piper is off limits!
3. No more dolly bags or any bags. The nice clothes bags for their babies have been tossed and replaced with toy bins.

Needless to say, our after dinner routine looks much different now." Let's color while Mommy cleans up," or "Play hide and seek with Daddy while Mommy cleans up." is now the new routine.

Still waiting...and waiting...for a dull moment. :)

Merry Christmas from the Austin Family!

Merry Christmas from the Austin Family! We had a blessed year with few dull moments (or quiet ones!).

Alivia, who turned 4 years old in May, is in her second year of preschool at the Gingerbread House. She attends 3 days a week in the afternoons while the little ones take their naps. She also started Sunday School at St. Vincent de Paul. She is extremely shy, but has done well in school. She likes to ride her bike, go to new parks, go swimming, and play dolls with Addison. In August, Alivia gave donated her hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, cutting off her long, long hair. She took swimming lessons this summer, and she plans on doing that again soon. She wants to start gymnastics again after the first of the year. Alivia is a big help around the house with her little sister and brother. Alivia plans on going to kindergarten in the fall.

Addison, who turned 2 in July, is the most vocal child in the house. She also is a very cuddling little girl and is rarely seen without her taggie blankets. Her most recent big achievement is to be potty trained (yeah, down to one in diapers!). Addison loves her many dolls and taking them on stroller rides. Addison and Alivia play well together, but Addison is still working on being gentle with Asher. Addison and Asher are almost the same size, so Addison better watch out! “Addi” will most likely start preschool in the fall.

Asher, who just celebrated his 1st birthday on November 29, likes to keep us on our toes. He ended 2007 by scaring us with a serious case of RSV that landed him in the hospital on oxygen for a few days. We were so lucky to have him home just in time for the New Year. Asher also climbed out of his crib at 7 months old, got his first black eye during story time at the library at 10 months old (I’m serious!), and was insisting on swimming under water at the pool at 11 months. In other words, Asher is all boy! Having taken his first steps, Asher will probably be walking before Christmas. So, we will soon have 3 kiddos to chase after!

Chris is into his 10th year at Northrop Grumman. Chris started the year off getting a nice promotion, which was a long time coming. This year Chris entered the ethics poster contest at work again and won 1st prize nationally! He does a lot of web development and logo work on the side, continuing to update Toglias Salon website, developed Luethge Homes’ website, developed a website and ad card for someone running in November’s election, and developed a few logos in and outside of work. Chris rode his motorcycle to work a lot this year since we had only the Camry to drive until July (when we broke down and bought a Honda Odyssey. Yes, a minivan!). Chris continues to keep his pilot’s license up, too.  In his free time, Chris escapes to music on his IPod, chats with friends on Facebook, and orders pizza late at night so he does not have to share.

I officially ended my job at Dey the first on March. Oh, what a feeling! It is a huge change of pace from working alone from my car to being at home full time. It is so much more work at home…the cooking, cleaning, laundry, playing, taking the kids places, changing diapers, and did I mention the laundry?! J I have loved every minute. The kids and I stay busy going to the zoo, Children’s Museum, Fontenelle Forest, swimming, water parks, visiting new parks around town, story time, daily walks around our neighborhood, play dates, etc. I am trying to take advantage of this time I have with all 3 kids at home at once before Alivia starts school! I did just start working at Janie and Jack a few hours a week. It helps me to get some adult interaction so I don’t start speaking in whine. I still try to find time to run, scrapbook, sell/buy on EBay, and update our family blog online (http://ckaustin.vox.com).

Another year brought more home updates. We had our new furnace and air conditioner installed in the spring. Chris updated the landscaping in the front yard and planted 40 tulips for me this fall! Then, after the high winds and hail, we had our roof replaced. Now that we have new carpet, new roof, new furnace/air conditioner, newer fence (and freshly stained AGAIN), newly finished basement…we think we may want to move! Chris would really like to be closer to his work, like in La Vista or Papillion. We have looked (and Chris almost bought!), so we know homes that we like do exist! I have been busying myself updating hardware, lighting, cleaning out and up our home to get it ready for the market maybe in the spring. So, maybe next year the return address will be different!

From our family to yours…Merry Christmas and God bless you in 2009! We look forward to hearing from all of you!

Love,

Chris, Krista, Alivia, Addison & Asher

The Light Before Christmas

The kids and I decided to go out and enjoy the calm before this potential winter storm by going to the zoo. We visited the desert (and were the only ones there), the aquarium, and visited one other little building before going to the noon IMAX movie, "The Light Before Christmas." What a wonderful movie! I would highly recommend it! I went alone with the 3 kids and they did fine. This was Alivia's second movie, Addison's 1st, and Asher's 1st. Although it was REALLY LOUD, Asher liked it and was kicking his feet like I was going to feed him when the movie popped up on the 6 story screen. It was an adorable, short 37 minute movie. Although expensive, it was a fun little treat to get more into the Christmas Spirit.

Let it snow!

It may be cold, but at least now it is pretty. As you can see, the kids, Daddy and I had to go out and play a bit. What fun!

Story Time with Santa

Addi and SantaAlivia & SantaAddison with RudoffStory timeAlivia and Santa

Today, the kids, Aunt Nikki, & I went to Village Point Janie and Jack for story time with Santa. It was so adorable! Santa, Mrs. Clause, Rudoff and an Elf were all there. There were only 3 other kids other than our 3, so it was rather intimate (but the weather was pretty snowy). Each child was able to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. Alivia asked for an airplane, again, Addison a dolly, and Asher...well, I did not even go there this time. He cried just a bit when Santa walked in! Next, they sang songs, then read the story of Rudoff the Rednosed Reindeer. It was the best Santa event we have ever gone to. It was nice to be able to spend so much time with Santa and the gang. Addison even sat on Santa's lap during story time! They left with a treat of a lolly pop, a little stocking of crayons, and memories of Santa that will last forever.

Sunday School Christmas

Today was Alivia's Sunday School program. How adorable! The teacher's read the story the birth of Jesus, while the kids came out in costume, acting out the role. Alivia was one of the angels. She sang and it looked like she had fun. After the program, Santa visited. So, the kids sat and talked to Santa again. Alivia and Addison (who was quite eager) asked for dolls while Asher cried. :( We finished the morning with yummy cookies and candy canes. What a great way to show the kids the true meaning of Christmas.

An "I owe you"

So, how's the job going? Well, overall, it is going well. It has given me a way to wean Asher for night time feedings (although perhaps I should work in the morning so I can get him over the morning one!), and it gives Chris some bonding time with the kids alone. I do miss them in my 3 hours or so I am away. Typically, they are asleep for most of the time, if not all of the time, I am away.
I have purchased something, hair bows. I bought a mother load today because there were additional employee discounts at Gymboree offered, and I have more to buy and J and J tomorrow. Asher is set (knowing that he will get some things as gifts) for next year. He just needs a few play clothes. I am struggling with what to buy Alivia for school next year. Oh, it would be so much easier to have her in a uniform! The idea of the clothes she needs overwhelms me, so I have hardly bought her anything in advance.
So, in the end, it is coming out an I owe you from working. I do think the discount helps some, considering the volume of clothes we have to buy for our 3 kids. And, I enjoy the pizza night I get after coming home!

Asher's Baptism Anniversary

As we do with each of our kids, we celebrate their anniversary of their baptism in a special way. Typically we watch the video of the child getting baptised (although we did not get to this today), remind the kids what it means to be baptised, and then have a little treat to celebrate the special day.

Today was Asher's 1 year anniversary of his baptism. Although he still is too young to know what is going on, he does know that chocolate frosting is good, cupcakes are good, and baths are fun. So, he had fun!

Visit to Santa 2008

Today was our annual trip to see Santa Claus. After last year, I was happy that Grandma Kathy when with us this year. We arrived at the mall before Santa Claus arrived at his workshop and were the first in line to see him. Addison acted very curious and maybe a little excited even. She was the first jump up into Santa's sleigh. Of course, if Addison is up there, Alivia will try. Santa helped to warm her up so she would sit in the sleigh, too. Then it was Asher's turn. Let's just say, he still has stranger anxiety and Santa is not one of the exceptions. We took a few pictures and video'd a second before calling it a day. Alivia told Santa she wanted an airplane (so I guess I will wrap one of Asher's toys up for Alivia), Addison said she wanted a baby doll (check!), and Asher just wanted Mommy. We played a little at the mall, shopped and then ended with a nice warm Panera lunch. I think we may have wore Grandma Kathy out!

Until next year...HO HO HO!!

Alivia at 4 1/2

Alivia had her half birthday on November 25. We kinda let this one slip by without much recognition. Although I do not want to let the time pass without updating on what Alivia is up to.

Alivia has matured a lot since turning 4. She no longer has her intense fear of noise. Yeah! She went to her first movie in the theatre and loved it! She loves to watch movies at home now, like Toy Story, Polar Express, and The Wizard of Oz. She also loves to laugh to Tom and Jerry and Curious George. As she has gotten older, she is sharing better with her sister and helps more with Asher. She likes to play babies with Addison, do each others hair, read books, play in their closets and stay up late running back and forth from each others rooms (not so happy about that last one). The 2 of them will play endlessly somedays, while others want nothing to do with one another. Alivia did pick afternoon preschool (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) so that she would not miss any play time with Addison. She likes to walk Asher while holding his hands and carry him (although he is soo heavy, he is getting far to big for this now).

Alivia takes pride in her counting abilities...she counts until I say, "Okay, that's enough for now." She also likes to write her name and draw and color pictures. She can color for a long time during quiet time some days. Alivia is quite timid amongst her peers, but warms up quickly to new family members (like Cousin Dave and Cousin Rodney who we rarely see).

Alivia's favorites:
To do: Watch movies, play with Piper our cat, play with Addison, color
Foods: Totinos Pizza (yuck!), grapes, mandarin oranges, cocoa puffs on weekends, and dessert
To Go: The desert dome at the zoo, the Children's Museum, open swim at the ymca
Etc: Likes pink, her hair in braids, dressing exactly like Addison, Sunday School and Preschool, talking endlessly sometimes about nothing.

Dislikes:
Washing her hair, combing her hair, outfits that are not all pink, and most foods (she is almost as picky as Chris and I are!).

Happy 1/2 Birthday, Alivia!

Married to Kris Kringle?

Chris, or maybe I should say Kris, is big into the Holidays...every holiday, but especially Halloween and Christmas. Chris or Kris normally decorates outside the first nice day after Halloween (with all the neighbors staring), but does not turn on the lights until the day after Thanksgiving. We used to decorate inside the day after Thanksgiving, but this year it was postponed to the Sunday after (because of Asher's birthday party).

Here are some pictures of Kris Kringle and his helpers in action, with some bright and festive results.

Asher...the Toddler?

That's right...Asher is officially a toddler! It is amazing how much I see each of our kid's change after their birthdays. Asher's first birthday was Saturday and yesterday, December 2, Asher took his first 2 steps! Hey, that counts! He stood there shaking his arms for a few moments out of excitement, then took 2 steps towards me before throwing himself at me. Then, he did it 4 or 5 more times between Daddy and I. He takes the steps nice and slow and then gets too excited to continue. He has changed a lot since turning one. He now says, "Boppa" for Grandpa after Addison taught him to say it in our many car rides in the last few days. He also really loves our cell phone, the picture of the kids on it and the noises it makes when he presses the numbers. He actually made a phone call!

Oh boy, now we have 3 kids to chase after! I think we will take a break from working out for a while to conserve our energy.

The Eulogy: Honoring Grandma

Grandma Vera and Addison: December 2007Grandma Vera with Asher: December 07Grandma Marci & Vera playing with Alivia: Mother's Day 2008

I was honored to give my version of a eulogy for my Grandma Vera at her funeral yesterday. I used my blog I had written as a start. After practicing it over and over again, I thought I would be able to get through it during the funeral. But, I found it to be quite difficult. While I was presenting the eulogy, Alivia and Addison were both asking why Mommy was sad. :( I do think it helped me to honor my Grandma Vera in a special way, and I was able to write down special memories of her.

Remembering Grandma Vera

I am Krista Austin and am the daughter of Derald and Bette Graybill, and the youngest of Grandma Vera's grandchildren. I have had a hard time putting something together to say today about Grandma, because I can never do justice for all the things she accomplished during her 93 years. We are all grieving for an amazing woman, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a friend.

I will remember Grandma Vera in many ways. I will remember the days when she and Grandpa Cloyce parked their camper in my parent's backyard for many summers. She only kept a couple of toys in there, buy my sister Nikki and I loved to visit her. Grandma and Grandpa put many miles traveling in the camper.  I will remember her saying at Christmas, "Do you like it? after we opened each gift and having paper fights with my Grandpa George. I will also remember and say "Pert Near" her phrase meaning almost. Grandma loved to shop. I did not know one person needed so many nice clothes, especially coats! When I think of Grandma, I think of her living in her house on the northwest side of Shelby, going there on Memorial day for BBQs, playing in the backyard, and hearing Grandma play the organ. Grandma Vera was 93 years old, 60 years older than me. She most certainly did not want her age to stand in her way. She attended family gatherings and many of my kids' birthday parties and baptisms. She liked "farming" with my Dad, and she was amazed with how advanced Dad's combine was! My cousin Mark will remember the day he took her to the casino in Council Bluffs, oh how her eyes lit up when they walked in. They would still be there playing if Grandma had it her way. Grandma Vera absolutely loved being a Great Grandma and always asked about my kids when we would visit. She kept saying that my husband and I were going to have 2 girls and then 2 boys just like she did (Oh, I am not so sure about that one, Grandma!). We all have so many fond memories of Grandma Vera, memories that we will forever keep in our hearts.

Oh Grandma, we will miss you!

I will end with an exert from a poem I found titled, "Whispers from Heaven" written by Marilyn Ferguson:

"...I know how much you miss me

Your tears fall ever light

The pillow where you lay your head

Is wet with them at night

You needn't be so troubled

Stay close to God and pray

That someday we'll be together

One bright and glorious day.

So my love, you shouldn't question

My dear you need not cry

I've gone to be with Jesus

I really didn't die."

May eternal light shine upon you Grandma! We love and miss you!

Asher's 1 year Check-up

Asher's 1 year Check-up

Today was Asher's big 1st year appointment with his pediatrician. My Dad said that Asher was probably dreading it. Well, he would if he knew what was to come...the shots, the weaning...oh, getting big is so hard for a baby boy! But, Asher did not and does not know of these things. His appointment went well. Asher stood up in the room, cruised, played with his sisters, banged on the windows and played with his toys like he was showing off for his doctor. He is 28 3/4 inches tall (17%) and 20lb (15%) and his head is 43 cm (1.6 %). To look at him, you would think he was in the 100% - but I think he will even out as he gets taller. I was beginning to question who was bigger, Addison or Asher? She was 2 years old when she finally reached the 20 lb mark! They are close anyway. I constantly get, "Oh my, he is SO BIG" comments from people, mostly strangers (at the mall, at the children's museum, etc). Okay, if he was a small, delicate little boy, I would get comments that he looked like a girl, which I still get when he wears a red pant/shirt ensomble with footballs on it!. Seriously, the kid just can't win. And the head thing is weird. He is progressing fine developmentally, so his Dr is not concerned. The weird thing is, his head looks HUGE. I guess it is just proportionate to his body or something.

Asher did well during the appointment for the most part. He was very curious. The girls had their flu mist first and then came the exam and his shots.Asher does not like the table paper, so he does fine until he hears the paper. He quickly recovers once in Mommy's arms, though. He just laid on my shoulders and nuzzled into my neck.

Now, onto the weaning part. The pediatrician said to continue through this week as he adjusts to milk (I started him today on milk) and then wean next week. That will be hard on both of us.

So, let's knock on wood that we can stay out of the doctor's office until Asher's next flu shot in January (this is his first shot, so he needs 2 doses). No RSV or the Flu from the relatives this year. I realize it is the season for giving, but please, keep that stuff to yourselves.
