Healthy Trick or Treat Night

Alivia as Alice in Wonderland, Asher as Spider man, and Addison as Dorothy
Tonight we took the kids to Healthy Trick or Treat Night at the Omaha Children's Museum. We have never gone before, and I had to totally convince Chris to go this year. Whole Foods sponsored the event giving Halloween a healthy spin. The kids wore their 2010 Halloween costumes and trick or treated at 6 stations located around the museum. We also checked out a wacky scientist with some fun Halloween experiments. They were really cool! We even had a sneak peek of the big backyard display upstairs that will be opening tomorrow night (we are so excited about it!). It was a fun night with delicious treats, and it was a great practice run with this year's costumes!

Our Haunted House 2010 - Many people asked about the spiders on the columns and then we started seeing everyone around us with them. I guess the neighborhood has a spider infestation!

October Morning at the Zoo

October Visit to the zoo
What a fabulous morning to be at the zoo! After the kids and I took Alivia to school, we took a peaceful (but chilly) run around Shadow Lake (the kids are all bundled with blankets and never complained!). Once at home and cleaned up, we decided to venture out and enjoy yet another beautiful fall morning.

We were ones of a handful of people at the zoo when we arrived. We checked out the jungle only seeing one other family. Then we went to the Aquarium. We love the aquarium and can stay in there all day. We then went to see the butterflies followed by the big spiders next door. Why do they have to keep the spiders OUTSIDE of the glass and above your head as you walk through there? I just do not understand that. Anyway, we then walked down the hill to the giraffes. We stayed outdoors for most of the rest of the time seeing the birds, fish, seals, and of course, playing on the playsets. We ended the morning seeing the gorillas. We wanted to take a train ride, but it is closed to weekends only now. Asher could not quite understand that.

What a fun and beautiful autumn morning spent at the zoo. It was so nice, I believe we will go back this weekend...weather permitting.
Looks like it is just us at the zoo today! Yeah!

Penguins anyone?

Christmas Shopping

Yesterday, I started Christmas shopping. Okay, I did officially start a week or so ago picking up a few new outfits for Alivia, but I got excited about it yesterday. My goal...to be ALL DONE with our Christmas shopping by the weekend before Thanksgiving. Bring it on!

This year I have vowed to not go nuts. Our house if FULL of toys. Seriously, full! The kids play with many of them, but there are many that I could clear out. The kids, however, hate to see anything go. So, the toys sit and collect. Sounds like I have another cold day project ahead of me.

For now, I have gotten Addison 2 BIG toy gifts...one from American Girl and the other from Pottery Barn Kids. Alivia and Asher I have gotten their clothes, but I have yet to buy any toys. Alivia has picked out a few things, so I have a place to start. I want to get a couple bigger gifts that will make their Christmas morning exciting, followed by other smaller items that they like but are not as expensive. Addison - well, I am out of toy money for her after 2 stores. So, she is getting a few smaller things to get the same amount of wrapped gifts under the tree.

The goal - make their Christmas special without taking money out of savings.

So far so good.

Here's to more shopping!

Dentist, Dr, Bounce, & Grandparents!

Jumping at Bounce U!
Yes, the kids visited the Dentist, made an unplanned visit to the doctor, bounce house and then ended the day by spending the afternoon at Chris' parents! What a day!

Alivia had her 4th and final day off of school. We had a big day planned. First, the dentist. Alivia has a permanent tooth coming in behind her baby teeth on the bottom. Well, two baby teeth are going to be "encouraged" to come out with a little help from the dentist so the permanent tooth can move into place. Gees! That sounds like fun. So, Mommy has to schedule another fun trip to the dentist.

We had a play date scheduled for 10 after our 9am dental check up, but we had a little time to kill between. So, we made a quick stop at the bread store. On our way out, Asher slipped on the rug and hit the metal door frame. Asher, who typically cries when injured, did not cry immediately, making me question a concussion. And, his head got HUGE immediately. Luckily, he hit ABOVE his eye making it a lucky incident really. But, I raced him to see the doctor to make sure he was okay. I was a wreck. I may be a nurse, but I can't see our kids get hurt. The doctor gave him a clean bill of health and we were on our way, bruised, but not broken.

We eventually made it to the jump house of Bounce U where I hoped our little boy would take it easy. Nope. He ran all over like he did not have a huge egg on his head. All the kids had fun playing with their friends Keegan and Nyah until lunch.

Then, they were off to see their Grandparents for the afternoon where they decorated (and ate) cupcakes, visited the park and played (Thank you Grandma & Grandpa!).

By tonight, they were more than ready to go to bed. Alivia summed it up by saying, "We had a fun weekend Mommy! We went to Coco Keys, we went to see both Grandma's and went to the bounce house!"

Fun weekend, check!

The After...Back yard Trees

All the trees on the Western side of the yard.

A clump birch, autumn blaze maple, marmo maple, 2 pears and another birch

New trees planted Friday and Saturday Morning: 2 Pears and a birch
The back yard trees are finally in. We have 11 trees in the back yard, two of which are just ornamental in the landscaping. I know...again, I have a "friend" who probably can not wait to make her mean comments about the size of our trees. Chris and I don't mind, we wanted them in the fall and this is all Lanaha had. And, lucky for us...trees grow!! We now have 2 clump river birches (we plan to get 1 more), 2 pears (we plan to get 3 more), a marmo maple, a autumn blaze maple, 3 crabapple trees, and 2 ornamental trees in the landscape.

Come and see the Austin Forest and growing private back yard. In a few years, we will have some fun fall activities...raking leaves!

Boppa Bill turns 65!

Happy Birthday Boppa Bill! We celebrated Boppa's big birthday friday night with Mama's pizza, cake and cupcakes. Yummy! This is a big year...I turned #35, Dad turned #65, Dad's sister turned #75 and my Grandma (may she rest in peace) would have been #95.

Happy Birthday Grandpa Bill! & Many More!!

Splashing at Coco Key

The Austin Family finally took over overnight stay at the Coco Key Water Resort in Omaha on Thursday night (Alivia has Friday and Monday off of school) to Friday. We arrived at opening at 4PM. It was a smaller scale water park when compared to The Great Wolf Lodge, but it was still nice. The park has a fun little area for the little kids with 2 water slides and zero entry. Addison and Asher loved this area, and Alivia liked going down the slides for a while. Then we moved onto the Parrot’s Perch, A many level play island with 4 smaller water slides, water cannons and a huge dumping bucket. Alivia refused to go down any of the water slides until Saturday morning, then she loved them. She just had to get over her fear. The kids also enjoyed the lazy river, and we floated around and around in this! They were so disappointed that it was closed Saturday morning for a bit, but it opened in time for us to enjoy it for at least another 1/2 hour. Nice to just chill on the river. All the kids got into the lily pad jump (Addi and Asher crawled across them) and the basketball hoop pool. Chris and I had to try out the bigger waterslides. There are 2 that one can go down on tubes, one dark and one light, and then one without a tube that is dark. I did not like the dark ones, but the light one with the tube was a lot of fun. I tried to encourage Alivia to go with me, but she refused. That's okay, Chris and I still got our money's worth (since it was free!).

There is food available pool side, restrooms with showers, and towels. We used their towels both days, but they are smaller and do not soak up much water. One goes through a lot of them quickly. The towels on Friday were better, but I may bring our own next time. We brought snacks, too, and I did not see that snacks were not allowed. People were eating right along the pool.

After swimming on Thursday, we ate dinner (that I had packed) before playing at the arcade. Alivia won a ball almost immediately, which made Addi and Asher sad. Alivia tends to be lucky.

The rooms, well, they just are not nice. Our room smelled like an ashtray and just got worse as we stayed. We opened the window which made the room cold. When we turned on the heat, it smelled like a heated ashtray, which is just disgusting. There were holes in the bathroom walls, the wall paper was falling off, and the bathtub was filthy. I'm just saying, if it was not free (Alivia won this remember at Kids Explore!), I would have been complaining to a manager.

Our biggest complaint about Coco Keys is that the air may be 84 degrees but the water is tepid at best. It is not bath water temperature, so Asher's teeth were chattering almost immediately. We had to get out both days because of Asher being so cold. He was miserable! It was so sad! They need to improve on the water temperature for the price one pays to go there. The girls tolerated it to a point, but they still were cold, with purple lips and fingers. Additionally, the room price ($175) is way to high considering the hole of a room you get. It is far from the kid friendly room and hotel of The Great Wolf Lodge...not even close. It would be closest to an old, yucky hotel at best. And, the water park opened at 4PM! on Thursday afternoon and not until 11AM! on Friday. That is crazy! I believe the Great Wolf opened at 9. It is a water park resort...so it should be opened no later than 9am. Just saying...

Positives we saw: Many life guards all over, Al (I believe that was his name. He was an African American man that I saw in the arcade and in the pool area) is awesome! I don't know what is job title is, but he ended our trip on a great note after he gave the kids handfuls of candy in the arcade after we had to wait (and were just going to leave) to turn in our tickets to get a mere 2 tootsie rolls. He was very enthusiastic and helpful whenever I saw him. Additionally, the water park offers something for everyone for a day of fun.

We may return someday. It is closer than The Great Wolf Lodge and offers many of the same things. However, we will wait until Asher is 5, Addi is 7 and Alivia is 9 so they can all enjoy the fun there and perhaps tolerate the cold better. And, we will not stay in the rooms unless they are much improved!

Going to Coco Key, here's what to bring:
1. Money: It is pricey. Need money to get in, eat and to play at the arcade.
2. Towels/swimsuits (an obvious one)
3. Snacks for between meals
4. & Have fun!

Family Favorites:
Alivia: Bigger slides
Addison: She did good for Addison. She liked jumping on the lily pads and going down the slides in the perch. She was a good sport!
Asher: He liked the slides and just splashing in the water.
Chris and I: We liked the BIG water slides and that the kids had fun. Best of all...it was free!
